How to plan social media posts with AI:
a week in five steps
AI can write a post in seconds. The hard part is making a whole week of posts lead somewhere instead of being written at the last minute. This guide walks you through planning social media posts with AI step by step: from your business goal to a weekly focus, daily posts, a human review and publishing. It works with any AI assistant, and every step comes with a prompt you can copy.
The short version
- Goal: start with one sentence about what should happen in your business this week.
- Weekly focus: pick one theme every post fits into.
- Daily posts: give each day a topic, format, time and reason; one day can stay quiet.
- Human review: read every post before you schedule it, using the checklist below.
- Publish: schedule in one tool, then look back once the week is over.
What to give the AI before you start
AI fills every gap with a guess. Three things make the biggest difference, and you only write them once:
- Your business: what you sell or do, where, and what makes it yours.
- Your audience: who buys from you and what they care about.
- Your voice: two or three posts you’ve already published, plus any words you never use.
Step 1. Start with a business goal, not a post idea
Before you ask for a single post, write one sentence: what should happen in your business because of this week’s posts? More weekend bookings, first messages from new customers, sign-ups for a class. Without it, you get posts that are correct but generic, the kind any business in your field could publish.
I run a bistro in the city centre. Most of our guests work nearby or are friends looking for somewhere to go in the evening. This week’s goal: more table bookings for the weekend. Suggest one theme for the week and explain in two sentences why it fits the goal.
In POSTIVA: you describe your business once in your profile, and POSTIVA builds a weekly strategy from your business goal, audience and offer.
Step 2. Pick one focus for the week
One theme a week means fewer decisions every day. The posts support each other: one shows the product, one the work behind it, one starts a conversation. Someone who sees two of them connects them into one story.
Plan a pace you can keep. Five posts you actually publish beat a daily plan you drop by Wednesday. A quieter day is part of the plan, not a gap in it.
In POSTIVA: the Strategy tab sets the goal and focus for the week and explains the thinking behind it. FREE includes one strategy to get started; CREATOR and PRO get a new one every Friday at 12:00 for the following Monday to Sunday.
Step 3. Draft a post for each day
For each day, decide five things: the topic, the format (photo, text, carousel or Reel), the time, one sentence on why that topic suits that day, and one call to action. The “why” feels optional, but it’s what lets you judge afterwards whether the post did its job.
Pick posting times from your own profile’s stats rather than generic “best time to post” charts. Your audience may be online at different hours from the average user.
This week’s theme is [theme]. Plan posts for Monday to Friday. For each day, give the topic, the format, the posting time, one sentence on why this topic fits this day, and a call to action. Write in the style of these posts: [paste 2–3 of your posts].
In POSTIVA: the Plan tab walks you through the week day by day: the main post, its format and why the topic works. Create post opens the editor with the format, date and suggested time already set, and the AI assistant asks about the angle, an example and the tone before it drafts the post in your brand voice.
Step 4. Read every post before you schedule it
AI gives you a draft; you’re the one whose name is on the profile. Read each post all the way through, out loud if you can, and run it past the checklist below. It takes a few minutes a post and saves fixing things after they’re live.
Step 5. Schedule, then look back at the week
Schedule the finished posts in one tool. If the same post is scheduled in two tools, it goes out twice.
Once the week is over, take a few minutes: which post started a conversation, a message or a booking, and which one went quiet? Keep one thing, change one thing, and let that shape next week’s goal.
In POSTIVA: you approve the content, time and profile, and POSTIVA publishes it automatically at the time you choose, on every plan, FREE included. A couple of days after the week ends, the Results tab shows what worked, what needs attention and what to try next.
A sample week planned this way
Here is a week for At the Table Bistro, a fictional restaurant: one goal, one theme and five posts from Monday to Friday, each with a time, a format and a reason. It’s the same example you’ll find on the free 7-day content plan page.
Restaurant: At the Table Bistro (fictional business)
Weekly goal: Show guests what awaits them at the table — from a seasonal dish to the work of the kitchen. Theme: Seasonal menu and the kitchen behind it. Combine appetizing photos with the story of the ingredients and a simple invitation to book.

A checklist for reviewing AI-written posts
Run every AI-drafted post past it before you schedule it.
- The facts are right.Prices, opening hours, dates and product names match what you actually offer. AI doesn’t know your price list unless you give it one.
- No promise you can’t keep. The post doesn’t promise results, deadlines or discounts you haven’t confirmed. In beauty, health or therapy, write about how you work, not about what a client is sure to get.
- It sounds like you.Read out loud, it sounds like your business, not a brochure. Cut any phrase you’d never say.
- One clear call to action. It’s obvious what the reader should do next: message you, book, answer a question. The link, phone number or inbox works.
- You may use the photo. It’s yours or you have permission, and anyone recognisable in it agreed to be posted.
- It fits the day and the channel.Time, format and length suit the platform, and the post doesn’t clash with something happening that day.
- Scheduled once. The same post isn’t waiting in two tools.
- A second pair of eyes for team posts. When a collaborator drafts the posts, the profile owner approves them before they go live. In POSTIVA that’s the Require approval before publishing setting (CREATOR and PRO).
Planning posts in Meta Business Suite vs. a weekly AI plan
If you post to Facebook and Instagram, you probably know Meta Business Suite. It’s Meta’s free tool and a solid place for the posts you’ve already decided on. The difference is who decides what to post and why. Weighing up other tools too? See AI social media tools for small business.

When Meta Business Suite is enough. If you know what you want to post, run ads, or rely on Messenger, WhatsApp and Threads, Meta’s own tool may be all you need. The method in this guide works the same way there: plan the goal, the theme and the posts with any AI assistant, then schedule them in the Planner.
When a weekly AI plan helps. If the hard part is deciding what to post, POSTIVA prepares the goal and theme for the week and the posts for the days ahead, and you review and edit them.
